IFAW's partner, Coco's Animal Welfare, was doing a survey in Guadalupana, a low income neighborhood in Playa del Carmen, Mexico when they came across a mama dog and her six puppies.
A kind neighbour let the mama dog stay with her puppies in her patio. They were under a broken car which provided protection from the sun and the rain. But the puppies grew up fast and they started to walk everywhere. The owner of the house was very concerned that the puppies could get hit by a car, which was likely to happen.
She didn’t know what to do, so she was considering calling the Municipality to collect the puppies. Luckily, after offering her advice and support to avoid having puppies roaming free, she accepted to foster the puppies.
To help, Cocos immediately brought a bunch of bricks to build an improvised fence, as well as water and food bowls out of plastic bottles. The kids from the house were very happy and helped. At the end, their reward was spending more time with the puppies.
All the puppies and the mamma dog were dewormed and vaccinated at that moment and then spayed.
At the end, the puppies were able to grow safely and all got adopted by the neighbors. This is a good example of how with little things like recycled bottles and bricks, we can encourage people to help the animals and be part of the solution.
